A few weeks ago I was going through old magazines at my parents house and found some Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues from the 80s and 90s. I've seen pics from them in that era before but I guess I never realized how thick literally all the models were. I feel dumb but I had never actually gone through one of the SI mags from that era. I get that they were not going to put high fashion super skinny models in SI swimsuit issues but I thought back then it was at least a mix of slim-fit and curvy. But no they are all, every model, soft and thick. The mags were my dad's so of course I was giving him a hard time like "why would you keep these, these chicks are disgusting" just to make him mad.
OK here are some examples I found online.
1994 cover with Kathy Ireland, Elle Macpherson, Rachel Hunter
What the fuck, are these bitches three weeks post-partum?!?? They all have thunder thighs and don't look remotely athletic. And could they not edit the cellulite in the last pic?
I'm glad you brought up SI swimsuit because this reminds me I've been wanting to roast a bitch: Oliva Ponton - I hope you're reading this. Getting asked to model for SI swimsuit was NOT a compliment babe. Your massive cellulite covered ass and lazy, flabby physique is on par with what they like. Put down the knife and fork before you get adopted into a family of hippos.
I honestly believe Sports Illustrated purposefully picks unflattering (aka "rELaTaBLE") photos of their models.
The only times they've had slimmer models on their cover: 2000, 2004, and 2014.
I am always confused about who they are trying to market to. Who is their target audience? I'm having trouble believing even their male "thick-thigh-loving" audience would find this appealing:
It's so extreme, it's fetish material.
Is this part of some grand plan/conspiracy to try to convince us that this amount of fat is sexy? What is the fucking objective?
I’m guessing the only sports these heifers could illustrate for us are walking to the kitchen and lifting a fork to their mouths.
It’s disappointing that young women are encouraged to look like this because it’s supposedly what men want, but I don’t feel bad for them if they’re brainless enough to get fat for some hypothetical male approval.
It makes me think of this quote my mother always used:
“Never wrestle with a pig because you'll both get dirty and the pig likes it."
- George Bernard Shaw
Yes, those two are totally what I picture when I think of the Swimsuit Issue. Like slim(ish)-curvy, conventionally pretty. They're "hot" and vulgar/slutty but that's perfect bc it's a jizzrag and SI never pretended it wasn't. Those two I totally get why the average guy would like them. But the 80s/90s models look literally plus size, which was a big (lol) surprise to me. When I think of the 80s I don't think of guys beating off to cellulite, but
