What do you guys think about this series? It kind of bothers me how many models come out whining about an industry that they chose to go into.

I think these ex-/pseudo-models "speaking out" find it easier to gain recognition through criticizing modeling standards than actually working to obtain or adhere to them. It's all self-promotion under the guise of "caring about women's health".

Precisely.
I had never heard of that Swedish model who basically has sex with nutella.

Edit - though I wonder if it is because they have the most power on the issue for publicity. If someone who never modelled discussed it people may say - what do they know? or accuse them of being jealous etc.

The only thing I like about this is that she called the putting on two stone thing going to an extreme.

I kept thinking "waste of face" for the second girl (Barbie).
Me too! I know someone who looks soooooo similar to her if it wasn't for the accent I would have believed it to be her.
Her body is vomit inducing and she has somewhat of a pornstar look when she purses her lips out too far but damn is she beautiful. She will look incredible as she ages if she cares for her skin and doesn't stuff her face with surgery.

Edit - DONE!

Ugh, this just makes me so angry. They're already lucky and privileged. Not many girls are born with the right height or facial features. God forbid they have to put actual effort towards their job.

If you get rejected from any other job with exacting standards for its professionals then it would be frowned upon to get butt-hurt about it so I'm not sure why the rules are different for modelling or why people think you shouldn't have to work at being 'right' for this job when you are expected to work hard at every other career out there.

Sure, most of us aren't suitable for it and may feel jealous of those that are, but it's not different to the fact that many people won't be suitable for medicine, law, teaching or don't fit the height requirements for police force or armed services etc etc. Part of being an adult is accepting that you won't be able to do absolutely everything you might want to in life, dealing with it and then working to get good at .something you do have appropriate attributes for.

Like @cosmic latte says, it's just easy at the moment to speak out claiming an interest in 'women's health' and get public interest as a consequence.

Yeah this is true. I feel like the people really behind pushing this "models are too thin" agenda are the ones seeking out and employing failed models to help their cause.

I guess I can't really blame the women so much for making the best out of their circumstances but at the same time I find it ungrateful to criticize an industry that they once benefited from. I have all the respect in the world for people like Cameron Russell, who acknowledges that not everyone is suitable for modeling and that it isn't a career all girls shoud aspire to. That's the message these people should be sending out as opposed to out about the requirements for modeling. Like @vanitas said, part of growing up is accepting that you might not be suitable for certain careers. I can't see why modeling is any different.

Edit: for those who haven't seen it

My thoughts:
1) I can't disagree that it is a bit extreme to be given the option of either losing 14 lbs or gaining 28 lbs at a baseline BMI of 17 (as she claims).
2) In real life, not all girls, especially young girls, are as educated as we are here nor have the resources that we have, so having a range of sizes (instead of HF and super plus size) likely would be beneficial. Not everyone wants to be super skinny so I am not against people feeling beautiful at "any" size (within a reasonable limit). The pursuit of beauty should be a positive thing that is done in self love, not a reason to punish yourself because you weren't born a certain way.
3) It really really bugs me that modeling as a career is now something to aspire to. There are so many job options out there. Not knocking anyone who is a model, but if you weren't born with the prespecified height/face/frame requirements, you shouldn't even be thinking about modeling as a career. Modeling isn't just about being a pretty face so why complain when you can't make it? Why didn't you choose something you were naturally good at?

With that said, these girls do NOT belong in high fashion, which is the industry they're trying to break. Commercial models have always been bigger and the market does cater to these girls.
Secondly, you're going to feel insecure in ANY industry. You don't think top models don't get criticized over their looks? It's supply and demand, Econ 101 - it's business, but the problem here is these girls are taking it personally, which tells me they were unfit to model to begin with.

i agree with all of the above--that being said, i *do* like that she argues that bmi is not an indicator of models' health....also agreed that losing 14 lbs at a bmi of 17 seems suspicious given that that would put her in the low 14's which seems low as a "requirement" for many agencies

I'm not saying modelling is sex work at all but the objectification of your body relates to this -

This quote literally changed my view.

Now that I'm reflecting, I agree with you a lot actually. I am really anti-sex work in general (but not anti-individual sex workers), but not because of women. I think that given the nature of our society, even if a few women feel safe and comfortable as prostitutes, porn stars, escorts, you name it, the vast majority are coerced to do so, underaged, or may even be enslaved (an estimated 70% of prostitutes world-wide are sex trafficked). Beyond that, even if a woman *wants* to do sex work, or finds it economical to do so, I always like to ask the question "why?" Why is it that in our society it is much easier for women to use sex, their appearance, their submissiveness, etc as way to succeed as opposed to their intellectual abilities, etc. Why is it that for women, sex and serving men are always the ways out? Just my two cents

I'm so about this. I think something that gets touched upon but is never well-articulated is that so many people have this categorical thinking, where if they're not a superskinny, they're practically obese. Where is everything in the middle?

am i the only one who thinks her face is whatever? I've seen pics of her without makeup. not that she's ugly, but she is not anything special. wouldn't change my opinion even if she lost 60 lbs. i think.

also dont get into this industry if you're not willing to work for it. your only real job requirement is to LOOK GOOD which means dont be fat. geez.
