Freida Pinto is an Indian actress (Slumdog Millionaire, Rise of the Planet of the Apes)... I think she is gorgeous and i always love her red carpet dresses.

She is 5'6 and i'd guess she weighs around 115 pounds...what do you think?

She doesn't look 5'6. She seems really tiny - at best 5'4, maybe?
And ehh I'm a little biased against her because in India, we don't really like her all that much.
But she's thin, alright.

Oh yes, I remember her! She's really beautiful and I like her body, though it's not that skinny.

Why is that? Don't you like the Slumdog Millionaire movie or is it just her?

A lot of people didn't like the Slumdog movie because it showed a really gritty, dirty side of India (which seems to be everyone's favorite angle) - I won't deny that side exists, but that's why the whole world still sees us the way it does (like when my sister when to NYU to study, her first week there, a million people asked her how she managed to learn English so fast & whether we ride elephants everywhere in our country).
The reason I don't like Freida too much is - when people like that go abroad & gain fame there, they get on these fake accents and start behaving like they're less Indian because they've 'made it' abroad (I don't know how many people will get this) - she's turned out like that.
Plus, we have a wonderful group of truly powerful female actors here & I feel she's a bit overrated (which is also why she hasn't done any Indian films). Most people outside of India seem more enamored by her unique features than her acting prowess. I'll give her that - she's pretty, but that's it.
And I can think of a million Indian women who would represent my country better than she does.

I am not Indian but I've always assumed a lot of Indians won't like her for the exact reasons you've mentioned above.. I completely agree with you.

She is definitely pretty but that's all.

Well I'm not Indian but in London we have a lot of Indians that were born here and they also agree with you that she's pretty but not that great and there are other Bollywood actresses that they would say are better than her. To me she doesn't look Indian at all, she has unique features and she's pretty but I wasn't impressed with her acting on Slumdog Millionaire. As for the accent thing could it not be because she doesn't spend so much time in India anymore? I have a friend at uni and she's from India and he has an Indian accent but I've also another friend that came to London when she was 15/16 and she doesn't have an Indian accent anymore.

My sister's been in the US for over 5 years and still talks the same way she used to - the way I do.
And we don't talk like those stereotypical Indian people you see on tv : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw6RgIf6epQ
I think it's a matter of choice whether you adapt a foreign accent or not. It's whether you exercise that choice or not that matters ;)
Also, Freida was educated in a convent school just like mine & she just moved there not more than 4 years ago (at 23).
It's more understandable for people who are born/raised abroad to talk like the people in the place they grow up in.

PS: Her complexion, etc. is very Indian. I think it's her bone structure that makes her look striking.

Maybe you're right. That video was hilarious. Lol.
On a side note this reminded me of recent phone call I received from a call centre in India, anyway I know they get told to make up English names etc, and he called himself John and said he's from somewhere in the UK but in the background you can hear all the other Indian people with the accent (it was obvious the call was from somewhere in India) and he's speaking like he's trying to be English. I wish the bosses there would just let them be Indian, what do they think that we won't talk to you if we know you're Indian??

@classichic
Whenever I've been to foreign countries (especially the US), I've noticed some people take time to understand what I'm saying(oh, and I don't talk like 80% of Indians with the 'Vaat iz goingg aan, yaar?') - just like I used to find it hard to understand tv shows like Friends and Will & Grace when I was 10 :p (You know most English tv shows/movies here still come with English subtitles!)
I think it's just to decrease the gap in culture, maybe?
Though it obviously doesn't work too well, haha

About the accent thing, I don't think that it's totally about a matter of choice. My mom for instance has a strong accent when she speaks french or english since they're not her first language, but when she speaks ukrainian or russian with family and friends still living there, they say she speaks differently than she used to. Yet she lived approximately the same amount of time in both parts of the world. Sometimes you get it, sometimes it'll just never work out.
I also have a romanian friend, and she also says she has an accent no matter what language she speaks, especially in french. And she's been living in Canada since she was eight I think. This other romanian girl we know came here at approximately the same age and speaks perfectly well the three (romanian, french, english), whereas she just couldn't adapt, and the two other languages messed up her romanian! Her mouth just doesn't want to cooperate, and trust me, she's tried to change the way she speaks. It really sucks sometimes, and it gets harder when you speak several languages to be perfectly fluid and sound like you should.

I totally get what you're trying to say & I have noticed it too, but Hindi and English are really quite similar in the way the words are enunciated and how the vowels are used - I have no idea about Romanian, but I can guess its not similar - and French is definitely not similar.
Plus we're taught English here at the same time as Hindi - since before we can talk. It's not really a secondary language.
Compare : before Slumdog http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV6HnKfcjWI
In 2011 : http://videos.freidapintofan.com/play.php?vid=164
On an Indian tv show : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbKq4_9uKes
I would call the host - well spoken and Freida confused whether to talk with an accent or not. In an in-between state of the 2 videos above.

It happens a lot here, btw. People go abroad for 6 months to the UK or the US & get these really fake accents when the come back.
A lot of other Indian actresses also have fake accents - can't deny that.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I never understood why people got upset that someone wasn't presenting their country "properly". She isn't a political figure for India. She is an actress. Her job is to look pretty and act. Just because someone was born in a country, it doesn't mean they should bare the responsibility of being all about that country. Yes, she was in Slumdog Millionaire, which I have not seen, but that doesn't mean that she is portraying every woman in India. Miley Cyrus is american, does she represent all americans? God, I hope not. I am half italian, do the drunks on Jersey Shore represent my heritage and therefore my family? NO.

As for her accent, everyone is different. I know people who were born in Japan who speak PERFECT english with no accent whatsoever. A close friend of mine was born in the states but her parents were born in Scotland. They have HEAVY accents and even though they have lived in the states for over 30 years, they still sound Scottish. They moved to the south and their daughter has picked up a southern - sounding accent after living there for 5 years but insists she sounds the same. I have twin friends from England. One's accent is much heavier than the others. I don't think you can call someone out for faking their accent or changing it just because in your own experience it hasn't gone away.

^Sure.
You're entitled to your own opinion.
I guess it's really in-my-face the change in the way she talks because I'm from the same country, it's hard t ignore.
As for her representing India, she's kinda is one of the few that people identify as from India (or maybe Apu, from the Simpsons) - my problem being she's not really a good actor.

I don't know how many people think of Freida Pinto when they think of India, but I sure as hell don't think Miley = America or the NJ Guidos = Italy

No way! I think of all the beautiful bollywood dance and the vibrant colours, spices etc. India is one of my must go to places (I might do my elective there) and Frida has definitely not put me off going there. I understand she's one of the few celebs that is Indian but she won't change anyone's thought of India or the people.

^Classichic, when you come to India, let me know ;)
