K-pop Singers

Full disclaimer that I’ve been neglecting the real world / fashion world and have spent this whole lockdown summer in the fantasy world of kdrama and kpop, so here i am again with a kpop singer

Anyway, one girl (korean-canadian) has come out with a new song and is definitely one of the skinnier girls out there right now. She says she’s 5’8 and 100lbs (172 and 47) which would make her around a BMI 16. Naturally, the western side of the internet has started complaining that she’s too skinny. (From translations I’ve read, the korean side is mostly appreciating her hard work and diet). She’s spoken up about how she’s losing weight in a healthy way and that people should let her choose for her own body. Her song isn’t very good in my opinion but it’s nice to see a skinny girl my exact height!

I've seen some new photos and videos of Somi floating around and while I think she does look good, she doesn't look like a BMI of 16 to me. If she hadn't posted her height and weight I would've guessed her current BMI to be around 17. Not to say that her weight loss wasn't impressive (because she was pretty chubby before) but I'm just surprised that she looks the way she does at her BMI. Maybe it's just me.

I think that’s a very fair estimate! I’ve heard suggestions that she’s not actually 5’8, which if that’s true would make her BMI go up automatically. But I couldn’t find an accurate source other that salty tweets so I can’t be sure.

small edit; i’ve seen before that some kpop stars lose a LOT before filming a music video and gain some of it back, so that could be part of it too. I hope she doesn’t, though!

Couldn't agree more. I would even put her closer to BMI 18, especially at that height, though I wonder could it be because she is korean? We know that they carry much less muscle mass than western people. They tend to look healthier at lower BMI's than people from the West.

Which is why it’s doubly ridiculous that people are complaining so much about her being “too skinny” honestly, people have lost all sense of what is too skinny

I'm not Asian (African-American), but I carry my weight similarly, and I can definitely confirm that. My BMI of ~15 looks more like 17, maybe even 18 by Western standards. It's nice because I can get to very low numbers and be perfectly healthy (I've never lost my period, regardless of BMI), but it also means it takes longer for me to actually look skinny-skinny, as opposed to vaguely underweight.

Yeah, the BMI is questionable tbh. She looks quite… soft? To me.

I’m Asian and I don’t think I “look” like a higher BMI than I am, but I also have noticed that the kind of narrow frame that does cause that kind of healthy-at-low-weights look is quite popular among K-pop singers. It’s probably related to the kind of exercise she’s doing as well.

There’s also the question of whether or not they’re truly telling the truth about their weights—I suppose we can’t exactly tell unless they’re weighed in front of a camera, though. What @abominable_princess said about losing weight before a shoot is my best guess tbh!

She's posted a picture on the scale and apparently got backlash about it with people (foreigners, not koreans) complaining that she shouldn't have posted her weight and height, given that she's taller than most korean idols and still strives for such a "low weight". I think she was probably proud of her hard work and wanted to show off.

I think that one of the “challenges” of having a relatively small frame is that photos don’t necessarily showcase how skinny they actually are (because they are not particularly “bony”). Someone with a larger frame with the same BMI probably looks comparatively skinnier in photos because their bones are more prominent. I’m guessing that irl, Somi would probably look skinnier than a girl with a larger frame and the same BMI.

That being said, one thing I’m increasingly becoming more aware of is that I have very little idea of what certain BMI’s look like on those with different body types to me lol. At least, when it comes to guessing someone’s BMI based on photos.

Yeah that's what I meant, sorry, by the small frame thing I mentioned. I think we also might consider that she could have been bloated on that day or maybe the lighting could have to do with it—like certain lighting makes someone's musculature more defined. I suppose we would need to interact with her in person to see how thin she really looks, as you said. Irl, it would probably depend on your notion of being skinny since it's kind of a vague combination of how bony you are and how small you are? It's hard exactly to put into words lol.

I don't think I'm able to guess BMI based on photos either besides guessing wide ranges such as saying one person looks overweight. Even different clothing could make someone's body look different, and sometimes people's weights fluctuate as well.

Either way, good on her for losing the weight!

Seungeun from BVNDIT is really dainty looking. I know nothing about the group but i remember that as soon as as they debuted, she was getting comments saying that she looks ~unhealthy~ and other typical comments. She's also one of the truly skinny idols I see these days.

Recents from Lalisa‘s IG. I think she’s gained weight. You can tell from the calf boots making her look short, upper arm bulge, and how her cheeks have filled out. That or weird angles / unfortunate bodybuilding program?

She looks the same to me. I think her body was overhyped, it was nowhere near as thin people made it out to be. Her cheeks have always been chubby too.

I noticed a slight gain last year that lasted approximately until May, but people seem to be blowing it out of proportion just now, when she's gotten back to her old self.

I also have a feeling that idols pose in such ways that they appear to have a thigh gap and she probably gave that up to appeal to the Western market, which doesn't value skinniness much, thigh gaps even less so.

I agree with this. I'm Asian and I have a smaller bone structure, so at my lowest weight, I still looked like my BMI was higher than what it actually was. It's why people are shocked when they find out my GW because it seemed scarily skinny in the minds, when in reality, I'd still look healthy, but just skinnier.

Saw the thumbnail for this Vogue video with Rosé and thought it (and some other screenshots) were worthy to share despite the outfit being posted here already. Just love how sharp she looks

I agree with @heize , that she probably wants to appeal to America. But her music is absolutely terrible and her body is so average now.

I read that she started lifting weights, but I don't really see an increase in muscle tone so maybe it's just that she started eating enough to be lifting those weights?
Seeing a lot of k-pop stars moving away from the super-skinny that k-pop was known for as western interest in k-pop increases and perhaps they are trying to appeal more towards the western market for $$ rather than stay true to k-pop norms

Regardless tho, Lisa has gained before (see below from 2019ish?) and lost it all, she probably will again!
