I could point out that...
I'm not forcing her to pronounce on politics,
...by framing her comment within a broader geopolitical climate, you are indeed politicising a rather innocent statement, or that...

I'm asking her not to trash Mykonos
...you did not so much 'ask' as 'lambaste', or that hers is not 'trash talk' but legitimate criticism of the pervasiveness of burglaries in Mykonos, or that...

located in a region whose devastated economy relies heavily on tourism to give it any sign of life,
...this is an absolutely precious observation when Mykonos is heavily over-visited by tourists, or that tourism itself is not an altogether innocent industry, or that...

it is absolutely stupid to be posting to tell her followers to avoid some 'unsafe place' in a week when the world knows her own home is considerably more dangerous
...she never called Mykonos 'unsafe', but even if she did, your logic is analogous to saying that Greenlanders can't criticise French kitchens because they don't have a strong gastronomic identity of their own.

But I'm not: I'm just going to say that you sound insufferably woke, and that the view must be fantastic from such high moral ground.

Honestly they couldn't sound like more spoiled, entitled brats if they tried. And with last weekend's shootings (that seem to have elicited no response from the US gov), I'm not sure it's the right time to be posted a terrible bikini pic telling the world Mykonos is too unsafe for you.View attachment 59468

I interpreted the caption as more of an "Instagram isn't reality, no vacation is perfect, bad shit happens to privileged people too" rather than "trashing an entire country in a way that relates to politics and shootings", but given that issue with Bella not so long ago it seems people are quite eager to misread things the Hadids say to twist a political narrative. I think that bulging thigh and refrigerator waist are reason enough to trash Gigi without overanalyzing the implications of her I'm sure innocently-intentioned caption.

I originally thought it was a joke - as in, “I want Mykonos all to myself so am gonna tell you how awful it is so you don’t come”. But then the tabloids are reporting that she really was robbed. But why would she write “lol” if she was serious? Very strange

I think it’s just her trying not to let the situation get to her... I’m sure it was an awful experience for her but it’s probably easier to deal with if she tries to turn it into a joke instead of publicly expressing how scared she was/is. I don’t know if it’s the best coping mechanism but I do think it prevents people on social media from going absolutely crazy talking about it (unless everyone decides to turn it into a political statement which wouldn’t be surprising).

No, I actually didn't say that and I didn't ask her to comment on politics at all. I pointed out how funny it is for Americans to go and insult another country's safety after yet another shooting.

I said that it was absolutely insensitive and ignorant for a highly influential and affluent person to post like that about a country that has been completely ruined by austerity measures for the last few years, and to top it off with a bikini picture and a lol. Whether we like it or not Gigi is extremely influential and with the whole 'lol Mykonos isn't what you see on insta i got robbed never going back lol here is a pic of me in a bikini' she genuinely has the potential to influence some of her followers' opinions of Greece, a country that is in absolute desperate need of tourist dollars.

Yes, it is legitimate that burglaries occur often in Mykonos, but no more so than in say, Paris. The difference is that Gigi would never dare post that because she would never bite the fashion hand that feeds her. But wow, let's act shocked to our followers that you were robbed in a country where more than a third of residents live in relative poverty, depending on welfare that has been cut by almost half since the GFC (which country did that originate from again? Oh yeah). How crazy that while you're flaunting your expensive boats and bikini pictures, you were pickpocketed by residents of a country that has been largely starved by its government.

She did not call Mykonos unsafe directly, but in saying that it is not what you see on Insta, that she was robbed and never going back, she was directly implying that yes.

You sound extraordinarily privileged. Yes, no shit it is over-visited. Do you know how many residents there that would love nothing more than for the trashy Western tourists to stop visiting and partying there? Unfortunately they know they can never have this, because tourist dollars are literally all that keeps them going.

How bout, if you want to influence your millions of followers' opinions of a country, you don't kick one that is so far down already and has been devastated more than any other country in Europe over the last 10 years.

So no, your last analogy does not apply. There are many countries she could have written this about where it wouldn't have been so inflammatory and she wouldn't be criticised so heavily. There are very few countries who citizens have been crushed as brutally as Greece's since the GFC and no other major world economies recently under austerity measures, something she as an American could never imagine.

You sound insufferable full stop. Sorry for the people who have to listen to your pretentious excuse for everyday English in real life.

I’m not saying what Gigi posted wasn’t stupid but I really don’t think the political aspect of it was on her mind when she wrote it - it’s pretty ridiculous to expect someone who just got robbed to react in a rational, politically correct way. I doubt it would matter if the country she got robbed in was economically stable or not, I’m sure she would react in the same way. It’s illogical for her to blame it on the country as a whole but trying to make her out to be some vengeful person trying to prevent people from ever visiting Greece is a bit extreme.

Also, her being scared to return to Mykonos doesn’t equate to her saying that America (or any other country) is any safer? She’s reacting based on personal experience?

Her and her sister are incredibly entitled and privileged, no one can argue with that, but I don’t think Gigi meant any harm by her post and I think blaming her for what other people do because of that post is unfair.

??? your logic is incredibly flawed. If this was the case, couldn’t you argue that Americans should stfu about all the shootings, because other countries have war? The whole ‘you can’t complain about X because Y is worse’ doctrine is so fake-woke and annoying.

she genuinely has the potential to influence some of her followers' opinions of Greece, a country that is in absolute desperate need of tourist dollars.
Her fans might be stupid but I doubt they would go as far as to completely ostracise an entire island/country altogether based on one celebrity’s briefly mentioned bad experience. Even so, couldn’t you then argue that Gigi telling forty-nine million people to Never Ever Step Foot On Mykonos would... idk.... stop that over-visitation problem? Jk, but my point remains.

All Gigi was doing was warning that even those who likely could afford stellar security and a safe hotel could still get robbed there, so those who can’t should be extra careful if they do go. It’s not an outright despicable point to make; avoiding calling a poor country ‘unsafe’ as to be PoLiTiCaLlY cOrReCt is dumb and redundant within itself, imo.

And as for making political statements on their social media: you don’t think the Hadids have the intellectual depth to expand past reposting sad videos on their stories, do you?

Lol you write with the pathos of a triggered keyboard warrior frothing at her mouth, @sentier, but...

You sound insufferable full stop. Sorry for the people who have to listen to your pretentious excuse for everyday English in real life.

...the regurgitation of those same mute points with an ad hominem twist makes for a rather pathetic rebuttal. Still, I shall forward your condolences to the martyrs I call my friends, suffering as they do under the aesthetic freight of my rhetoric!

Edit: Shit, forgot to point out that you are mobilising the privilege of a native English speaker against my polyglot self. What benefits can I obtain from my linguistically marginal position????

On a lighter note, this was commented on that picture and pretty much sums it up

I hope you’re being sarcastic.

I think there’s a small part of me that was a fan of the like singular day that each of them looked decent but catching up on everything in this thread has truly shown me the error of my ways and I am not going back. Thank god for SG, I so so clearly need it!

From now on when I see wannabe or instagram models saying things like :"We were so original during this photoshoot" or "The best creative team ever!" or "When we met we felt instant chemistry and we did amazing stuff" I will have this pic in my head and laugh 😀
