Instagram Versus Reality

I'm so confused. Did they actually get lip filters and whatever done at that age?? Or it's facetune? Hoping it's the latter.... Like who tf would be okay with their 16yo child getting filters. That's fucked up.
I think for rich kids in the LA area it's not uncommon for wealthy parents to pay for nose jobs and lip fillers early, which I think is fucked up too. According to a gossip forum site, someone said their friend Madison Beer (extremely wealthy, associated with Justin Bieber, instafamous teen) befriended Sahar and Kelsey and actually paid for their surgery... I have no idea the validity of that, but clearly they've all gotten some work done, somehow, but facetune a ton too.

Sad... all of this is insecurity at its finest.
I used to be extremely insecure about my appearence and that's when I posted the most selfies on social media, edited of course, with tons of filters, making my face thinner, my eyes and lips bigger, my waist smaller, etc etc. Then you start to get likes and compliments but it's weird because you know that it's not the real you.
I hope that these girls learn to love themselves instead of continuously seeking validation from strangers.

If this is true, I honestly have no words. Regardless of what anyone says, kids at that age are not mature enough to fully understand consequences and appreciate what they want later in life. This is such a failure in parenting. So so sad. Facetune honestly sounds better.

Oh boy, can't believe the queen of photoshop hasn't been mentioned here yet!

Dakota Rose, surely you've heard of her. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/koti.rose/?hl=en

Known as someone who photoshopped her youtube videos and pictures so badly that when she got invited to a japanese TV show everyone was left shocked, to say the least.

I gladly present you:

Yes, this is all the same person. Couldn't attach more files, but she has been evolving like some pokemon ever since 2011 and her looks just keep changing. Google it, there's a whole drama haha

Oh my God, Dakota Rose. That takes me back. Her and her family are insane.

Anyway, this thread is just making me sad.. 16 y/o-something girls are now striving for beauty standards the people in the pictures they admire don't even reach. And they all have the same face too.. same nose, lips, style. I don't know if any of you know of the Tumblr nastygall but it's basically full of these instagram models. Once you scroll through it too much all of the girls faces start to blur into one. Why isn't more diverse beauty accepted? Honestly, this is part of why I like the fashion industry. What they do well is give girls with interesting, not cookie cutter beautiful faces spotlight. I was always insecure about my thin lips until I got into fashion and models.

That's what I love about HF models too. Weirdly enough in the general media, there's a very narrow beauty standard. But so many HF models look so different and some might not even be considered beautiful in the general media. Sure, they need to be skinny, but that's an easy fix that doesn't require invasive surgery. How is that not super impowering compared to plastic faces?

As for photoshop. I've never understood why you would photoshop yourself to look completely different on social media. You know what you look like. Everyone around you know what you look like. If you get popular enough soon everyone will find out you faked everything look like a complete fool (see Dakota Rose).

Yeah her jaw is just a bunch of fat, unlike the sharp one she has in her Instagram photos. And I agree with the Elsa hosk statement, she makes herself look so thin on her Instagram. I do think she is actually pretty though. She is somewhat skinny, but definitely not as thin as she portrays herself to be

These are some photos all from around the same time (May/June) View attachment 16677View attachment 16679 View attachment 16678View attachment 16680

The first two are from her Instagram, while the third is from VS I believe, and the last is a candid. As you can tell, she looks much thinner in the ones she posted, and a lot less toned in the ones she did not.

Hot tip: when these girls use the warp tool to nip their waists in, they do it on photos where one or both arms are up (touching their hair or something). Otherwise it gets too obvious from a warped-looking forearm.

This thread is so great...

There's so much personal branding these days (via Instagram). I don't know if it's necessarily a bad thing, but men certainly go for it. The number of girls I know who are average in real life but have a strong media presence and become instantly more attractive because of it. It's sick.

Do I sound salty? ;)

Being a wistful old fart, but could the age of insta-whoring comes to a screeching halt sooner than later PLEASE. Imagine a world where the popular thing to do is give off an off-the-grid vibe and where people cherish a bit of mystery.

The whole Instagram versus reality is something that i've been thinking about a lot lately and actually this model (she doesn't seem to get a lot of work though, she has a unique style and a great body)I follow on IG, Ariel, is doing this performance art project through her social media. The whole purpose of the project is to pretty much discuss the topic of how social media reality vs reality has been conjured to create a society hellbent on achieving an unrealistic standard, which is absolutely true in some cases.

There are some double standards for her, but I think she recognizes that and she addresses them on her blog post here:

I remember trying to curate a really specific type of Instagram aesthetic and then realizing how bull shit it was and why the hell would I put energy into something so feeble and shallow. Now I just don't care and post whatever I want. Granted, I do HATE a bad photo of myself ;)

give off an off-the-grid vibe and where people cherish a bit of mystery.

THIS is more interesting, sexy, and admirable to me than putting in an obvious amount effort into a fickle outlet like social media.

Sorry for the book!

I know she's faaaaaar away from Skinny Gossip standards, but I find that Demi Lovato is one of the worst offenders of the "Instagram vs Real Life" deception.

Seriously, she's like a freaking magician finding angles and employing who knows what kind of digital sorcery to look so much slimmer in her social media pictures, take these pics from her Instagram and Snapchat, for example:

But whenever someone else takes a photo of her, she always, always looks considerably bigger:

demi-big1.jpg

(And all these photos are from around the same period)

I just think is silly to pretend to look a certain way when there are literally tons of photos of you taken every day showing what you actually look like ... Also, I thought she was a big advocate of self acceptance and body positivity? :meh:

This is almost exactly what Amalia Ulman did, to great acclaim too. She would sneak into rooms at 5* hotels to portray this unattainable life, faked a boob job and a nose job (or maybe she actually had the procedures, I can't remember). She's had international solo shows from it. So as much as I applaud Ariel and can see the differences in each project, it's really not that much of an original concept.

Demi's thighs make me so uncomfortable. They look way too big for her body, even though the rest of her isn't very small either. Each thigh is like the size of her waist. It just looks so wrong

I feel like having that body shape would just feel really uncomfortable too. I do feel for her as I know she's been through a lot, but for lack of a better word, every one of her limbs just looks so turgid, I feel like movement would be a constant reminder of being at unease.
