Natalia Dyer

Even if she was sick - though I agree it's a rather baseless assumption - why does the show need to address it? Why does the whole world need to know about her health status in order to enjoy her work? Such entitlement.

View attachment 12922 And meanwhile no one mentions her obviously overweight friend:whistling:. Such double standards when it comes to attacking a thin girl vs someone who needs to take pointers from her.

So I suppose that if Stranger Things suddenly feels the need to create a sub-plot surrounding Nancy's weight, it should involve her friend, too. "Barb the Lunchtime Bully."

Found this on reddit.
Can we talk about how wrong this is, please? "hips wider than her shoulders and breast development"
Not every woman has wide hips or huge breasts. Some women also have broad shoulders, which makes their hips tiny in comparison.
In this case I'm ill too:whistling:

Since when did chubby = developed? I can be a bitch sometimes but what kind of person thinks it's okay to say that a beautiful, elegant 19 year old looks unhealthy as she has "no secondary sex traits" (what a creepy comment ew) just because she doesn't stuff herself with cake everyday?

I have a very personal, visceral reaction to callous comments like this. I spent my adolescence being told that I looked "anorexic" and "like a boy" because I had very narrow hips, very small boobs, and was naturally very thin- up until I was 20 or so.

Just because a girl doesn't have big tits and a large hip to waist ratio doesn't mean she "doesn't have secondary sex characteristics", and you can't tell if someone is anorexic by looking at them!

I hate, hate, HATE the false concern of assholes who say shit like this, as if they are really concerned about Natalia's health, and aren't just made self conscious of how they look in comparison to a beautiful, elegant, skinny girl!

On the subject of Natalia, I find her to be stunning. I LOVED Stranger Things (I could go on and on as to why, but that's a different thread!) and one of the reasons was getting some major thinspo along with my sci-fi and horror fix!

Honestly, it's a bunch of dudebros on reddit claiming "Eating Disorder!" because a starlet dares to look after her own weight :eyeroll:

What's even creepier (as a lot of you ladies have pointed out) is that their comments almost exclusively focus on her breasts/hips. Like, if they can't properly objectify a women, then there must be something wrong with her, amirite?

(Aaaand the obligatory thinspo tax on my ranting....)

All good points - I especially agree with you about the "self conscious assholes" thing, as Natalia is obviously a very beautiful girl. It just disgusts me when people get so caught up in their own jealousy that they just spew hatred and rumors, and then have the nerve to say that it's out of concern. Um, no.

Haha I thought that the hip/boob comment was quite irrelevant as well. I've never been larger than an extremely flat A or B (even when I was at my heaviest, ~130-135 lbs at 5'10 . . . :disgusted:), depending on the bra. Like, I literally have no boobs.

Ughhh, it made me so mad though: I have an aunt who is on the slender side herself (not super-skinny, but she looks pretty good for her late-50s), but she has pestered me for years about my weight; every time I see her, she says "gain weight!" In the past, I had asked about her experience with breast augmentation, as I used to consider having the procedure done as well. Well, when I saw her this summer, I told her that I was finally starting to feel like maybe I was happy with my body after all, and that maybe I'd wait a few years before reconsidering it again. Then I laughed and made a joke about how flat-chested I was, and she said very dryly, "You know, if you gained weight, they'd grow." I just stayed quiet and shook my head.

Dude, you all are preaching to the choir - go comment these things and call people out!

Edit: This sounds super-critical and I don't mean it to. I can think of several reasons why someone wouldn't. But if your Reddit is anon, and you aren't exhausted by arguing with assholes, I strongly encourage actually telling people that this is hurtful and wrong.

No, no, nooo, you didn't sound critical at all, @Ellie! If I had a Reddit account, I would most certainly follow your advice; alas, I tried Reddit once many moons ago, and (I'm probably just a complete idiot, but) I found it confusing . . . so I gave up that account. :mclap:

So ye ask, so shall ye receive.

EDIT: Maybe not quite as acerbic as you had in mind, but meh.

Just did! I might get into it more, if only just to laugh at this sort of stuff in study breaks. And to come back you up when I'm not so exhausted, if need be.:flower:
Lol yasssss. I've been thinking about making a "Best of Reddit" thread in member articles, so that members here who are also on reddit can showcase stuff like this (and get backup from other members when the HAES brigade eventually downvotes them into oblivion) but I honestly don't know how well it would be received. Reddit is kind of a shithole, no if's, and's, or but's about it :meh:

That's a good idea! I've noticed Reddit mentioned a lot in the "things fat people say/eat" threads too, so it's not like it's something people aren't doing already here anyway. If anything it'd be a good way to compile and contain a lot of the idiotic keyboard warrior spiels to one area. Do it!

That's a great idea! I don't have a Reddit account, but I lurk a lot because it's actually pretty funny and nice. I'll definitely make an account to support you girls if you're ever being downvoted.
