So I read the book (I originally got it for the SG book club) and decided to watch the movie. I really enjoyed it, however after reading the book I felt like there was a significant amount left out, including a few of the murder scenes and characters. They also didn't really show any of the crimes - the book was definitely more graphic. In a movie like this, I think they should have shown the crimes in detail. However, I still really liked it. (Oh and I watched American Psycho II - the worst sequel ever made :superpuke:).

What do you guys think really happened and didn't? Do you think it was all in his head, or that it actually happened? I think everything except the scene with the cat in the ATM and the police shoot out happened.

I think a lot of stuff was taken out of the movie to obtain an R rating! I know it was originally NC-17 and there was editing because it's really hard for movies to make money with an NC-17 rating.
But I agree the movie would have been better if more stuff was included and elaborated on, but I think it was pretty well done considering (it's both my favorite book and movie)

I think that everything really happened since I guess the point was that everyone is so wrapped up in their own world and themselves they don't notice their own colleague/friend is a raging psychopath so I don't think any of it was in his head but that's just my guess I really have no clue!!

@skinnieminnie - Oh, okay that makes sense. It sucks though that in this day and age people can't just make the movie to the best it can be without being threatened by a ratings agency because of what they feel is "appropriate." I wanted to see what they were describing instead of having all of that stuff outside of view whenever it was happening. But I agree - it is still definitely one of my favorite movies :).

I liked it so much that I decided to watch the American Psycho II - but that movie is so bad compared to this one - it should be illegal for them to have the same name, haha. It totally misinterprets the meaning of the original - it's hard to describe but if you watch it I bet it will annoy you as much as it did me.

I know the rating system is ridiculous--it's a parent's job to decide what their kids can and cannot see, adults should not be restricted over ridiculous censorship laws. And is it a sequel?? I might have to watch it just to see what this atrocity is, but there is definitely no need to make a sequel or continuation of that film there's no way it can be good:rolleyes:

Ugh god - Ellis (the author of American Psycho) strongly opposed it, and for good reason. No way was there supposed to be one - that's the whole point! He gets away with it, he doesn't really have a motivation other than his own desires, and that's how it ends. It is a perfect ending for that story. But ugh - the sequel has some girl killing Bateman because she is mad that he killed her babysitter, and then she wants this position in the FBI and starts killing other people in line for it - it sounds bad, but if you watch it, you will see that it is much worse than what you are thinking. It is a disgrace to the original.

HAHA are you kidding  that is the most atrocious plot line i've ever heard--I may have to watch it just to fully grasp the horror you're talking about.

You do - its on amazon instant to rent for a few bucks - but trust me it is 100x worse than you are thinking. (Directed by Morgan Freeman, Mila Kunis plays the lead, it's like something off abc family )

I watched it last night and I think I can see without a doubt in my mind it was the absolute worst film I have ever seen. I am hesitant to call it a film but I'm seriously upset that my favorite movie is being tarnished like this--they shouldn't have the same name

If you liked American Psycho, the book, you need to read other Bret Easton Ellis. I'd particularly recommend Glamorama and Rules of Attraction (the latter of which has a very decent movie adaptation).

I just love his stuff - it really captures the zietgiest of the 80s, and he writes in such an apathetic, distanced manner that it's easy to miss he's a moralist at heart.

I am currently reading Less than Zero by him and enjoy it (the movie adaption is so loosely based it isn't really worth comparing but it does have Robert Downey Jr. who I love so may have to watch it anyway) but I'll definitely check those books out!! i think he's a fantastic writer and I love his style of writing if that makes sense

Less Than Zero is an excellent place to start! It was his first book actually (he was only 21 when he wrote it). His most recent book, Imperial Bedrooms, actually picks up where he left off with Clay, Blair et al in the present day, as disillusioned 40 year olds. And I totally know what you mean about his style of writing - I love it too.

I didn't know that was his first book!! That seems so young--I'm going to be 21 in less than 2 years and I can't imagine writing a book especially a phenomenal one like this one. I'm definitely really into the story so I'll have to read Imperial Bedrooms too!! Thank you so much I have so much trouble deciding on new books so I love suggestions!! :)

I told you - it's hard to put into words how much of a disgrace this movie is. I agree - its the worst I've ever seen and it definitely tarnishes the name - it is like they took every good thing about the first one and threw it out, replacing it with not funny jokes, a horrible character line-up, and a bad plot. The first scene where she kills Bateman pissed me off - the whole like "she killed my babysitter and I was mad" made me want to start screaming at the tv that THIS ISN'T HOW THE FIRST ONE WAS AND THAT ISN'T FUNNY. Haha idk but I knew from the first moment that this film should be burned.

I didn't even understand it! Like I followed the ridiculously simple plot but I just didn't get the point or understand why multiple people agreed to be a part of this heinous production

I know. It's such a shame - a sequel could have been done in a way that continues the story, maybe into how he continues his lifestyle at an older age, or how someone nowadays would go about doing what he did, or something like that, but this movie is a mockery of the original, and made me sick - I could barely get through it. For me it is like when someone takes classical music and symphonies and the composers, and then tries to make it "cool" or jazz it up or something like that. Ugh my god that drives me crazy.

I just watched this for the first time two nights ago! I wanted to think none of the murders happened at first, but now I think it's more commentary on how self-involved the world is (with a sprinkle of he's insane and sees things that aren't there). I just wonder, the empty apartment...notice how it looked freshly painted (and I think a can of pain in the closet)? Does that mean someone just cleaned up the gruesome murder apartment?! And the old lady kind of knew who he was (the murderer responsible)?
