Eating Disorder Movies

Is it just me, or do any of you actually enjoy watching ED-based movies too? I think I watch them to convince myself I don't have one or I'm not that bad off, but also to portray that it goes WAY beyond the whole appearance aspect and that these movies target something deeper and that they portray the personality element and break the stereotype that it's just "privileged white girls seeking attention by starvation crash diets" and whatever other nonsense people like to say about ED sufferers.

My personal favourites:

-- For the Love of Nancy
-- A Secret Between Friends
-- Kate's Secret

I don't know if 'enjoy' is the right word, but I have watched quite a few and I find them so interesting and heart-wrenching. A lot of them are made beautifully.

I think they're great in terms of helping people understand eating disorders in more depth, but I can also see how they'd be triggering for some people.

Enjoy was probably the wrong word! I just like watching them, I find them fascinating. Especially to see if the actors/actresses can really portray the eating disorder well.

I'm trying to decide if watching them recently has been triggering for me or not, but I think I use them to convince myself I'm not so screwed up :\

I feel like all of the "ED" movies are all mostly lifetime movies and are really dramatic and stereotypical. It's just like-- skinny girl, starts to think she's fat--starts exercising-- notices she's losing weight-- starts to restrict-- then it goes all out-- then she's in the hospital-- then she's recovered-- and it's perfume and roses from there on out. I like watching them too, but they're so tacky and only show a glimpse into what a real eating disorder really is.

That's what I think about TV show EDs, but surprisingly, some of these movies are dead on, and scarily so at that! (Like Kate's Secret :run:)

Is it sad that I kind of loved that one too.....:nervous:

I mean I understand it's cliche. Gymnast becomes anorexic, the other is bulimic, the anorexic almost dies, the bulimic does nothing. But I love it still. She took it from casual diet to full out hard core crazy within an hour. But then the ending completely and utterly ruined it :hmm:

OMG yes I forgot about that one!!! It's tragic but good! And she was the one who finally tipped me over getting my center part back :luv:

i watched it when i was suffering from my ed and i was really depressed, but for me the worst part is when she confesses to her mother and her mother can't tolerate the situation and the girl cries "nobody understands me, no one does".

it's a little bit triggering but for anyone who didn't watch it i completely recommend it

(sorry but what do you mean by "tipped"? i looked it up on the dictionary and could;t find it

I remember that part :(

Oh I mean, she just helped me finalize my decision :) hahah. She ROCKED that center part, I figured I could too :nopity:

No not sad at all! I must say those kinds of movies are my total guilty pleasure as well, hence why I'm on this thread haha

Ummm YAY :) Maybe it's because I'm finally admitting I am still dealing with one (and will forever have to), but it gives me some fantasy land character to relate to and to realize that it is normal for an ED sufferer, and I can understand what would hypothetically be going on in the character's mind.

 I am a center-part rocking machine these days

I've cried watching an ED movie too :( I cried while watching For the Love of Nancy. It's PAINFULLY accurate and gripping IMO

Oh man I've watched all of these movies. Many are cheesy and cliché but I'm weirdly drawn to them anyway.

I just watched Sharing the Secret! Oh my gosh I just want to give that girl a hug! She really is beautiful though. Her hair!:luv:

I watch these too - another one that I watched that was pretty good was Hunger Point. This one I found to be less cliché because of the ending.
