Wearing Heels

I think a thread about how to properly wear heels could be helpful. If you have any tips on making high heels more comfortable, improving your walk, or your favorite outfits to wear with them, share with us!

I wear heels a lot, and I usually just deal with the pain. They make me feel fabulous, so it can be worth it. However, if a shoe rubs in a certain spot, I put some clear matte scotch tape on my foot where it's being rubbed, and it stops the pain entirely. This trick also works to help get heels on your feet if you have a shoe that's a bit snug. I carry a roll of tape in my purse at all times.

I LIVE in heels so here are a few simple things i do to avoid crippling pain:

- if you want to wear super high heels without the pain (i'm talking 5 inches and above), definitely get a pair with a platform. There's less pressure on the balls of the feet that way.

- Some pairs of heels have an awful grip on the sole so to avoid slipping and humiliating yourself, stick some very strong double-sided tape on the bottom of the shoes making it pretty much impossible to slip.

- If you wear heels a lot, give your poor feet a day or two off a week off

- Carry foldable flats everywhere if you know you'll be in heels for a long time. If you're going to work or taking public transport, walk in flats and change just before you go in. Plus, you'll avoid ruining expensive shoes by getting them stuck between pavements or cobblestone roads.

- Never EVER wear brand new shoes to something important without breaking them in first at less important events. Trust me, i've had far too many experiences of horrendous blisters and pain on dates or at weddings because i didn't test drive those bad boy shoes out

-Oh and if you have a treadmill at home, it's worth to practise walking or breaking in shoes on it without ruining them outdoors.

I wanted to ask whether do high heeled shoes shrink your calf muscles? I've heard this a lot and as I want to be more flexible, I'm pretty afraid of that.

Target has a small section at the end of their shoe aisles that sell clear or black non slip bottoms for the soles, small gel inserts to keep your heel from slipping out and small gel dots to keep your foot from sliding forward. Most department stores also sell these but Target is of course cheaper. These all help but if I have to be standing all day I prefer open toe because it allows for the inevitable swelling to occur without crushing my toes.

Sometimes I don't know why I bother. I am in the sciences and when I go to conventions I swear I am the only woman wearing clothes that fit and heels. Why do some women insist upon wearing men's suits *rant over*.

Yeah heels are not great as a routine.

"The results indicate a large increase in bone-on-bone forces in the knee joint directly caused by the increased knee joint extensor moment during high-heeled walking, which may explain the observed higher incidence of osteoarthritis in the knee joint in women as compared with men."

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22431211

"Shorter GM fascicle lengths were observed in the HH group (49.6+/-5.7 mm vs 56.0+/-7.7 mm), resulting in greater tendon-to-fascicle length ratios. Also, because of greater AT CSA, AT stiffness was higher in the HH group (136.2+/-26.5 N mm(-1) vs 111.3+/-20.2 N mm(-1)). However, no differences in the GM PCSA to AT CSA ratio, torque-angle and torque-velocity relationships were found."

im so disheartened from reading this (i'm studying to get into the sciences later on). why is this??? damnit i wish someone would invent a gun at badly dressed people so during emergencies id shoot them and then theyd look fabulous. hmm, maybe ill invent that when im a scientist

I used to wear a lot of heals back then and I could walk miles in it. I always wore heels at work, in the clubs, for shopping etc. and never had a problem with it. But when I gained I found it looked wrong on me because down from my belly I looked v-shaped and so I went for the short and stumpy look

Now I totally have to re-learn how to walk in heels. Since I have an office-job I wear them to work because there're not that many miles to walk :)
So I guess you have to do it step by step and wear them a little bit longer or walk a little bit longer in them each time.

I also have many shoes that I wear only on occasions like going to the movies, to a restaurant where I want to look good but don't have to walk

PRACTICE! Seriously I am trying to train myself to wear really high heels because of my height and when my roomy is gone I just walk around my apartment in them to practice.

I used to hate wearing heels but then I had to learn when I started doing pageants. My advice is to start small with one inch heels and move your way up.

I used to wear heels a lot when I was about 20 and I can walk very well in them, but my knee is not the best anymore as I had a bad accident when I was about 16, so I needed to stop if I didn´t want to have a swollen knee all the time. I talk about real high heels of course - stiletto heels ;) All other moderate heels, plateau heels, chunky ones are still ok.

Imho the thing every girl in heels has to know is that the center of gravity changes when you wear them, so you need to make sure that your back is straight when you walk and that you don´t lean forward cause that looks very inelegant and I see that quite a lot when I look around, women in killerheels who look like they walk on eggs and will fall flat on their faces in a minute ;)

If you have to walk a longer way somewhen and the ground is uneven (cobblestone f.e.), make sure you practiced how to walk somewhat gracefully on your tiptoes without the heel touching the floor. Its unpleasant, but its better than falling or breaking your feet.

Don´t buy cheap heels. Its not worth it.

What the others said: Give your feet a few days off every week, walk in flats when you go to work and change before you enter and so on...

When it comes to fashion I have to say I don´t like heels combined with very short dresses that show a lot of skin. It often looks cheap. I also don´t like heels combined with very girly looks so much - like flower dresses, shorts and stuff like that - I think a pair of nice boots or cute, maybe moderate heeled sandals look better then. Heels work best with trousers/long skirts/dresses/ edgy clothing for me. Plus many classic business looks work well with fancy heels.

Couple of suggestions:

]Dr. Scholls makes foam tape you can put in your shoes or on your feet where pain points might be with your shoes. You can put on as much or little as you need.

Have good posture. You may want to slouch as you wear higher shoes but you need to make sure you stand straight.

Practice walking in a mirror. Video yourself and see how you look.

I agree with a previous poster to start small. Don't try 5 inch heels right off the bat. Work your way up.

My guy friend pointed to an idiotic looking girl downtown the other day, and goes, "Hey, it's a Velociraptor!", and my boyfriend laughs. After some explaining, it turns out that it's their name for girls who wear suuuper high heels and walk leaning forwards with their knees bent.

That cracked me up  Thats indeed a perfect name for that phenomenon

Best thing I've heard all week!

I like the look of heels with skinny jeans, but I think it's easy to mess up. In my opinion, wearing tight jeans with heels and a tight top is too..I don't know. It makes me think of a girl clubbing for the first time and needing a fake ID to get in.

Skinny jeans, heels, and a cute flowing top is perfection.

but can it ever really become habit or is it just something you have to endure all the time for the sake of beauty?

Definitely gel insoles, and the lowcut socks (lowcut as in not even a tiny bit showing..) help a ton. Also - foot and calf stretching exercises. Other than that -practice, practice!
