Lana Del Rey

mte. Her job is to write, record, and sing. Sia, for example, now performs with her back to the audience - she doesn't want to be seen/judged, but still wants to do her job (which is to sing her music).

Sia is classy and keeps her clothes on, for Sia it truly is all about the music. As much as I love Lana, her image has been fabricated by a team of people to sell a brand. Once Lana took her clothes off she became a sex symbol. Perhaps she gained weight to be more relatable to the majority of average-sized women. This goes along with my theory of why Ke$ha was so popular and still maintains a cult following today. Her body and image is easily attainable... shy chubby girls see her being confident and crazy and think "hey, I can do that".

Having an "image" does not equate to relying on your looks to make a living. It is not Lana's job to be pretty nor is it her job to be a "sex symbol".

Her image is probably the result of a team, I agree, but she used to perform as many aliases on her own terms before she was connected to any major label (Lizzy Grant, Lizzy Grant aka Lana Del Ray, May Jailer, Sparkle Jump Rope Queen - to name a few). She had different looks as each of those incarnations. Taking off your clothes doesn't make you a sex symbol, imo. That would make every single runway/high fashion model a sex symbol. It's not like she posed naked for Playboy or Maxim (magazines dedicated strictly to attracting the straight male audience). I sincerely doubt she gained weight to be more relatable to average-sized women. She has health issues and is depressed, that leads to weight gain in most cases. Also no offense but calling Kesha chubby is pretty low since it's public knowledge that she has had an ED and went to treatment for it. Her body obviously wasn't easily obtainable for HER because she was killing herself to look that way.

Singing and looking pretty is her JOB.

I agree with this, to an extent.
I know she's not a model and isn't making a living directly via her looks (thus isn't required to look perfect all the time), but the 'old hollywood glamorous bombshell' look/act is who she is as an artist (what she is marketed as).
While her looks aren't imperative to her maintaing her fame, it is relatively important that she retains some kind of grasp on that image at all times (it is what made her famous, after all). Part of her selling point as an artist is looking and acting a certain way. It's kind of like Lady Gaga, everyone knows that her image as an artist is her centered around her eccentricity, and she commits to that the majority of the time. Lana's image as an artist also hinges on her ability to convince people that she is authentic, that she is what she says she is.

Although I don't think she needs to look perfect while at the beach, even the prettiest, skinniest girls can look washed up coming out of the ocean. I do think she would look A LOT better if she lost some weight.

Just my two cents on the whole thing (I apologise if this comes across as incoherent rambling).

omfg :wtf::wtf:

I mean... I don't think it even matters whether or not it's her job to look good. We're talking about her on this website, not on a forum about music reviews, so her body is what we're going to care most about. Of course everyone can have their own opinion about her talent but I don't see what's the problem with judging her looks--that's what the forum is for...

That said, Lana herself has implied that her appearance is a big part of her "artistic identity"--she defended her SNL performance a couple years ago with "I actually felt good about it. I thought I looked beautiful and sang fine." http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/lana-del-rey-talks-snl-performance-20120130

Completely agree - the point of the forum is to discuss who is and isn't skinny! And I'm sure we all agree Lana needs to lose a few.
I think what was offputting was the comment it was her job to be pretty and skinny as it isn't actually her profession.
But I have no issue with judging her looks and saying she's pretty but fat or unappealing altogether or whatever the hell people think of her and the thread should just go back to discussing her looks!

Whether or not it isher job to be good-looking, she should dress according to her body. If you look like that you should at least try not to show that cellulite and fatrolls.
Know the line of good taste (and pretty much same goes for Britney or Kim)

I didn't even realise she modeled :/ I'd love it if she lost back to what she was in thoae pics. Especially because she's older now and her face is obviously more attractive.

I was never a fan of her appearence. Not when she was average, even less now that she gained so much weight.
But I really like her music to the point that I don't care about her looks. Her songs, her voice, touch me so deep... They say she is manufactured (like if all the others aren't), that she has a rich papa... Well, if it is the case, I'm glad for it! Otherwise maybe she would be unknown and I could not enjoy her music. And I say this as a musician with no rich papa.

I don't see any problem with commenting her body or weight gain, I enjoy her music but we all have to admit that she wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for her image. She has a character that people are attracted to and the whole lolita\indie look she has gained her a lot of popularity, I wouldn't say it's ALL about the music for her, she's famous for her image and looks too. When you put yourself out there people are going to either praise you or judge you

She is stunning in my opinion. Or she would be if she was thin. She seems like the sort of person who would keep herself relatively skinny so when I saw a rather unflattering picture of her wearing shorts recently I was shocked! her legs are huge! I love her tho... her music is beautiful.

In a celebrity culture that revolves around looks/beauty/sexuality you have to be EXTREMELY talented at something to make your looks irrelevant. And I don't want to offend her fans, but she is nowhere near that level of talent or artistic expression. So...she should take more care of her looks.

At least (in my opinion) she has musical talent whereas Cara just kind of looks like a walking billboard for McDonald's and less like a model
I think she sounds good in her songs, but then again, her songs are not in the least vocally demanding. What I mean is she probably has ear for music, she does sing clear, but her vocal range is not very impressive.
Also comparing her to Cara I had in mind that they are both fat and their daddies bought them careers - although I'm not sure when it comes to the latter but it's a frequent rumour I've been hearing since she started being big (pun intended).

I hate the life she glorifies. Like it's so sexy having a coke addiction (which why aren't you skinny then?!?!?) and a dick in my mouth 24/7 (again, if this is true why aren't you skinny Lana?).

Sorry if this has been said before but I HATE her. She's such a goddamn 'role model' to some of my hipster friends and I just can't behind the plastic, sugar daddy lifestyle. She needs to get a new 'thing' and I swear to god the next one of my friends that tries to play 'this dope new Lana remix' will be left in the goddamn desert. I don't care if I'm not adding anything to this conversation. I just really really hate her.
