Thinspo & Inspiration in Movies

Recently a SkinnyGossip reader emailed me and shared some movies that she found inspiring. She thought they might be inspirational to some of you so I wanted to share them with you. I’ve only watched a few minutes of each one so I can’t give you an honest assessment of what I think of them. They seem to be similar to a normal two hour movie, but have a storyline pertaining to dieting/eating disorders/starving yourself to be thin/etc. They are different than some of the other thinspo movies that I’ve watched on YouTube, which are usually video clips and pictures of real skinny girls and models, with music added to make a video.
In any case, I thought some of you might find them inspirational. I know we all need different things for inspiration and thinspiration so I know this will work for some and not for others.
Enjoy! Thanks Mandi for sharing the movies with us!

Thanks, Dying 2 Dance looks like it’ll be good, I’ve only watched part 1 so far. I’ve seen some of the other movies before and they’re great! Another one I really love is The Best Little Girl in the World.
Also, there’s two episodes about it on the Canadian show Degrassi, season 5 episodes 15 and 16. I really like those.
I´m not sure about that. Some (all?) of these films are about eating disorders
I don´t have an ED, and I think you can achieve or maintain a very skinny frame without being sick. That´s my philosophy and my message I´m trying to tell everyone I know, and I thought this was also the message of this site. Sometimes I´m finding this Pro-Ana Stuff pretty thinspiring, too, but I don´t like the idea behind it. Just because I´m skinny and want to be even skinnier, I´m not suffering from a mental disease.
I´m not blaming Skinny Gurl for promoting this – I still LOVE your site and what you´re doing – but this is pointing in a direction that could be dangerous. Again, that´s just me…
I agree with Fili, it is a thin line to walk. Fortunately I think Skinny Gurl agrees with you too.
lol, as I’ve said a million times.. all of these “starving tips” have the potential to do harm if taken too literally.. I like watching these videos because the girls in them work really hard to be skinny, and working hard at anything is a quality I admire and strive to emulate. That doesn’t mean I’m going to starve myself, because if I did, I would lose brain cells and it’s hard enough as it is getting into medical school, lol! However, these videos and sites like this inspire me to work hard at everything, including eating healthy and working out, which in my case, helps me stay thin. We all get lazy sometimes and we need the inspiration to push ourselves again.
super skinny me is good too. it’s not a movie but a tv show about two journalists who go on two separate diets to lose as much weight as possible in 7 weeks. they both work really hard and try out some crazy stuff i think it’s kind of inspirational though, it shows that you can lose weight tho a lot of the things are a bit unhealthy so some might not find it as inspirational.
I love Super Skinny Me. =) I’m a journo, I wish my projects were that exciting, lol.
One of the journos develops the start of an eating disorder, the other doesn’t. So I guess it goes to show how everyone’s different and how these things affect people differently.
I find it thinspirational that they can lose the weight and stay motivated over the weeks. Even if it’s not completely healthy, it’s still quite interesting. And it’s full of figures which are also interesting. =)
I just watched “For the Love of Nancy”, and it was really good! Nancy looked like a pig at the beginning, but when she started loosing weight, she looked amazing! However, Nancy had anorexia, and didn’t stop loosing weight. So, she started to look a little grotesque; she had dark, purple-ish bags under her eyes and her hair got really thin, etc. So, yeah, I definitely agree with Fili in the fact that you can totally be skinny and beautiful w/o going too far…
@Abbey, I just watched For the Love of Nancy, and then watched it again. I found it interesting that her body got small, but her head always seemed big, like her cheeks weren’t sunken at all or anything, maybe that was just me but I found it odd? And then at the very end it seemed proportionate again. I don’t know.
Anyway, I thought it was good. I’m not sure if I found it thinspiring, but definitely interesting. =)
@Cass, i never noticed the thing about her head, but i will watch the movie again and see. When it first showed her when she was home from college and her mother invited her friend over, i was so surprised at how much weight she had already lost! she looked soooo much better.
I really love For the Love of Nancy, but it sometimes weirds me out. You know, the actress who plays Nancy (Tracey Gold) was actually recovering from anorexia when she shot the movie. So, the scenes were filmed in reverse order. It’s funny that even knowing that, I still agree with those of you who think that she looked “so much better” when she was semi-anorexic than when she had recovered… Does that mean that some people really need to be “almost” anorexic to reach their max beauty? :/
I have seen all of these shows, and I wonder if you could get inspiration from the ones I do. They are more normalized and fun to watch, but very impactful. For me watching Clueless and other movies that are quirky with posh chicks who watch what they eat is good. Also female action movies, like Elektra, Resident Evil Apocalypse, and Hanna. Sucker Punch as well. These movies inspire me because the girls are skinny and fit. And there is no touch on eating disorders at all. Do any of you have other normal movies that inspire you this way?
Aly!
))) oh oh and Soul Surfer is like super fitspo
i know i’m late to the party but i’d say the TV show Supersize vs Superskinny is a good one, and then the movies The Virgin Suicides, Girl Interrupted, and Mermaids!
Black Swan is my favorite thinspomovie, i think i should be added to the list
