Hate Comments & Hate Emails – Reverse Thinspo?

Hey skinny gurls!
I hope you are all doing awesome!
As you might have guessed, SkinnyGossip can be a very controversial site, which means a lot of people can have strong views towards or against the site. The majority of visitors love SkinnyGossip and its contents, however some do not. My point is, I tend to get a lot of hate comments and hate emails. Most of them I read and never respond because it isn’t worth my time or effort. I’m curious if any of you find thinspiration or strength in reading what these haters write?
I’m thinking about posting these hate comments and hate emails on the site for you to read. What are your thoughts?
XO
~ Skinny Gurl

I don’t know about the inspiring part, but I think readers comments on this ‘hate mail’ would only spark more angry reactions towards the site from outsiders.
I wouldn’t want SG to have to deal with more slander than she already gets, but if she’s willing to deal with it, it’d be interesting for all parties to see the counter-arguments.
ps. what do you guys do when you’ve messed up on your diet? it’s only 7 am here and I’ve already failed breakfast. I don’t want to ruin the rest of my day
Hi Belle,
I usually stop and write in a journal about my mistake, my progress, and how I want the rest of my day to turn out. That way you actually take the time to really think about your diet plans and goals. This kind of conviction won’t let you down!
What you mean? Breakfast boosts your metabolism so whatever you had it can’t be that bad.
I feel like that’s a good idea. I’m curious to see what they have to say. I think your site is a breath of fresh air, however. I’m sick of people making excuses like “you’re beautiful no matter what size you are!” because they don’t have the skill or motivation to be thin and fit. Right on Skinny Gurl.
What sort of things are being said?
If it’s them saying you’re encouraging eating disorders or something, I’m not interested.
But I am curious to see some of them – especially the ones someone has put a bit of time and effort into and yet is still completely ridiculous. Like Belle said, I’m not sure if I’d find it inspiring, but it will get me worked up and angry haha… does anger burn cals?
@Belle – Forget breakfast. You still have the rest of the day to redeem yourself. If you were allowing for any treats, don’t have them. Breakfast is only the beginning – if you have a good lunch and tea, consider it a win =) Good luck! Xx
You know, I’ve found this website helpful. Anorexia isn’t healthy. And I’ve gone through most of your posts and found no sickly girls. Some are very thin, yes. But this is SG’s website and her view on physical aesthetic. I see plenty of sites promoting curves. I don’t sit there and write nasty comments. And on a side note, most of the girls featured here are healthy and fit with proper diet and exercise. Since when was taking pride in your appearance and care of your body considered a bad thing.
Well, that’s my thoughts in a nut shell. I just find the hate comments amusing. Must be lonely on their pedestal. **boo freakin’ hoo**
exactly. I totally agree. SkinnyGurl never posts anorexic or sick looking people. The aesthetic that we all aspire to on here is skinny-healthy-beautiful.
If you ever come across an anorexic/pro-ana site, the images that they post on there as their ideal body are disturbing. Nothing like this site at all.
the other thing I love about this site is its HONESTY.
all the celebrities/models on here are REAL people in the PUBLIC eye, people who most people would agree are gorgeous. However people can’t deal with the truth, which is, these skinny models and celebrities most likely do not eat very much, and have to work extremely hard to look that way, including occasional starving/fasting. Personally I find nothing wrong with this, but a lot of people don’t want to admit it/hear about it.
We all know that if we want to look like Vlada, eating 3 large meals a day with snacks and treats is probably not going to do it! lol
anyways what a rant ha. but yeah love this site! xxx
haha very good point!!
love it!
people who can’t accept us are the very same people who turn out like Hitler. people who are so unbelievably closed-minded that they can’t accept anything but themselves, anything that doesn’t display a “made in china” bar-code along the side, anything that hasn’t been bleached and scrubbed from evils and anything that isn’t uniformed.
that’s my opinion anyways
stay strong, whatever your view.

xx
I suggest ignoring those kind of e-mails and comments is the best thing to do. If they don’t get a reaction from you (us) they’ll realize how pointless their efforts are and eventually stop writing. Seen it a million times on other sites. Love this site, btw.
Greetz!
Hi skinny gurl
If it helps you to share, then you could email the comments to those that want to read them. However, if those that send you such rubbish see that their hatred has been published, that will only encourage them to send 10 times more. My feeling is that it is best just ignored, but of course in the end you should do whatever feels right for you. Thanks again for this fab site.
They’re not inspiring. They’re just pointless and because of that, they’re funny
If someone says that you’re promoting anorexia, I don’t believe it. I believe that anyone suffering from this disease after visiting this site either already had it, or was more inclined to have it. Personally, after I’ve started going to this site, I’ve become more and more in control of my own health. I’ve lost 15 pounds since I started visiting this site, and it’s been in a healthy way. And I’m sick of people saying that we should worship “curvy figures” (which is usually an overweight figure)I’d rather see someone with a little xylophone than fat hanging out all over the place!
agreed. humans no longer have any concept of what should be ‘acceptable’. there’s too many people nowadays to try and fit them all in the same box. if people want to worship overweight people, they can. but i think if we want to worship skinny people, we should have that same right.
We have Thursday Thinspo…how about Hump Day Hate Mail? (Wednesday of course). That way, for those that want to read it, they can, and for those that don’t, skip that post?
Why not? I wouldn’t say it’s was inspirational as much as it was overpowering AND entertaining.
First I thought I´d like to read some of the hatemails – but now I´m pretty sure I already know most of the content, like “this is why young girls have eating disorders” or “you´re promoting anorexia” bla bla bla. Nothing new.
So all in all, better leave them in the trash bin where they belong instead of publishing it – they´re just not worth it.
People today have wrong conceptions, both of what is healthy and what is sick, and what the term “freedom of speech” means.
Please don´t do them a favour by giving them the attention they´re so desperate for.
I agree. What’s normal today is chub. If you speak out for thin, some people will hate you. It’s odd but I blame it on such things as the food industry’s influencing public opinion…
Kathryn,
That´s not odd, you´re totally right.
It´s not only the food industry, it´s every kind of industry responding to the social phenomenon of obesity. Tell the people that they´re allright, and they´ll buy your stuff.
I always wonder how stupid and misleaded some people are when they think that adverts and campaigns with curvier models were showing “the industries growing respect for womens natural shapes”, when it´s obviously not at all about respect, but about economic reasons and moneymaking.
yeah you are totally right. The whole reasoning behind using curvy models is to make women feel as if they can relate to the model, therefore they feel more comfortable to buy the product. Unfortunately today there are more ‘curvy’ and over-weight women than thin women, so advertisers know it makes them more money to appeal to the curvy and over-weight audience.
that being said I do believe that ALL shapes (providing that they are healthy) should be celebrated, including curvy (and I mean real curvy like 50′s Marylin Monroe not today’s fat-curvy) and healthy/toned athletic AND skinny. Because all women are “real women”.
Please don’t! Keep the trolls under the bridge where they belong.
I second this comment!
Oooh I’m curious. Post it, please?
I second that…please post?
I must admit I’m curious, but I don’t think they deserve to be published on this site. We really enjoy everything you’re doing- thank you!
I’m kind of curious too.
Why don’t you post them with just a title showing on the main page, so those who are curious can click and read and those who’d prefer not to can just skip over?
I’m down for this plan. Good idea Marie! It only seems fair that the people who don’t want to read it, don’t have to
I am curious and I do find those types of comments motivational in a way, but I agree that it may cause SG more grief to publish then its worth…
I wouldn’t want to read hate mail. I imagine that the only thing it would bring would be more hating comments, and I hate it when people argue, haha. Live and let live, be nice to people and ignore those who are being mean to you, if you can.
I find the hate comments and stuff pretty amusing but I think what other people have said is probably true, if we ignore them they might go away…maybe?
Its up to you SkinnyGurl. I would definitely read them if you did post them, though. Just for a laugh
Post them! I am the most motivated when I’m pissed and hate always pisses me off, so I don’t know for the rest, but for me it will definitely be thinspiration
Love your site and I don’t think you promote anorexia in any way, you just say (and post) things that we’re all thinking and that we all like (who doesn’t like pretty, skinny, girls?)
xxx
Maybe just post one or two to let us see what they are like? Then let us write our comments. But not more than a few, particularly the funny/crazy ones.
Or not…ugh…fat girls being righteous…ugh…
post the hate comments on here and turn off comments!
LOL they’d be SO amusing to read. and mostly hate comments are from people whom we’d love for them to hate us
I’ve said this before, but I just want to say, I LOVE the sense of community here! Reading through these comments, there was no one being bitchy or anything – everyone just voicing their opinion, and backing each other up.
You girls are the greatest; YOU’RE the way of the future and I love it!
Maybe those with an eye for a better physical aesthetic are also nicer? =)
so true
I love how people here are so respectful to each other, even if they have completely different views.
Has anyone else also noticed that everyone here seems to be smart as well? everybody speaks and writes well and makes really interesting, intelligent points.
I guess we’re better looking, nicer AND smarter, haha.
Well it could be a fun read?
But if it’s just ‘Yall anorexic and sick close this website’ comments, then dont bother.
lol… so that leaves the ones proclaiming they’re chubby chasers I guess. “I love a woman with big hips and a round ass” ugh. I hate how they never say anything about a waist-to-hip ratio, they just say fat is okay so you don’t have to do anything about it.
I must say, I do love a bit of hate mail induced giggles to start my mornings. it’s actually quite hilarious to listen to people get on their keyboard warrior outfit and mash it out email style.
We all know that hate mail comes from the fatties who just can’t seem to put the cupcakes down. I’m not even even sure it’s worth it to be honest SG. What surprises me is why these fatties come here to rant. I don’t get it. If they don’t agree with us, then why are they here. SMH.
@BELLE; I used to feel sooo guilty when I mess up my diet, so=times I still do, but av learned that worrying does nothing good for me. If anything, it can’t make you have a “fcuk it” attitude which can lead to you eating more of the wrong stuff.
Also, I make sure I never ever compensate by further restricting just cos I made one mistake, that can lead to more hunger which can lead to more eating.
The good thing is you made ur mistake early in the day, giving you time to get over it by doing good. I promise you that having a righteous salad or dinner following a mistake can make you feel so good inside. Forget the mistake. I’m pretty sure that you already had the kcal balance to cover it up anyways, its just your mind playing naughty tricks on you.
Don’t worry about it!
you are awesome! I am a fattie who can’t put the cupcakes down and this is just what I needed to hear. (Some harsh reality.) I need to get down to 110-115 max and have been struggling for the past 1.5 weeks as I am going through a bad break up/quit my job and am confined to my house. God I am such a loser and being a fat ass 130lbs is not helping! Thank you thank you. I am now getting ready to go running. (Already went to the gym this morning but my whinning deserves an ass-kicking work-out!)
sara c- dont give up! a couple of years ago i too was a “fatty” who weighed about 135- a weight unfortunately many people would say isnt overweight but for my height (5’5) most certainly was. i was uncomfortable, had low self esteem, and hated going out. the key is to stick with it- i did diets and cleanses until i thought i was going to explode with frustration! now i can say that i weigh a healthy 108- still have some way to go- and that as soon as i hit like 115, probably 6 months or so after i started taking dieting seriously- it totally changed how i felt about my body and myself and how others reacted to me. it is SO WORTH IT- i cant even say. i also highly recommend reading “women, food and god” – i saw an oprah on it and just that episode totally changed how i thought about what i ate. i realized that despite dieting, my relationship with food wasnt exactly what it should be- which is based off of nutrition and nothing else. keep going! i know it seems so hard right now but i swear it is WORTH IT! you will thank yourself later when all your clothes magically look a million times better!
I love this site and wish I were on the path to skinny but I’m 5’4 and 152lbs and feel like there’s no way I’ll ever be skinny
I wish I had a skinny friend in real life so she could mold me.
don’t feel bad Bek! Before I got pregnant I was 5′ 7″ and 145— but at one time, I’m ashamed to say I let myself get in the 160s (yuck). Once I give birth, we could email each other and be Let’s-Get-Skinny friends!
leave me a comment if you’re interested, okee? I think it’d be fun! (i’m due in November)
YES- i would personally LOVE to see some of these emails! i’m sure many of them would be very inspiring- especially those motivated by jealousy, which i’m sure most of if not all of them are. it can be a real boon and lifesaver to have this site when all the world is telling you if you at all try to regulate your diet you are anorexic and unhealthy. i would love to see some of the more ridiculous entries- i think it will strengthen me going out in the world and hearing negativity (aka those annoying girls who shout “curves are sexy! men like a little meat on the bones!” and other ridiculous claims), and in a perverse way give me more motivation, which, after all, is the key to reaching and maintaining a healthy, svelte frame. i had to think about it for a minute but I, for one, would LOVE IT.
I think it would be great to post them because it will make the site less biased. Sometimes I get the feeling that everyone on here is just agreeing with each other so as not to stir up any anger/fights, so allowing different views would be spectacular.
They would probably be amusing too, because I find some of the starving tips that I disagree with funny as well.
I really like that this site supports people who want to be thin and like the model-thin look, without it being a pro-ana site and going all psychotic, lol.
I can’t stand when people think that if you like thin then you must be a retarded air-head.. that’s completely untrue and I’m sure a lot of girls on here are smart, straight-A students (in fact, it would be interesting to do a post where everyone shares their current or past GPA if they’ve already graduated, and see the results — PLEASE DO THIS SKINNYGURL! Thanks)
I agree, many people just assume if someone spends time on makeup, clothes, and hair, works out everyday, and eats healthy to have a good body they are stupid!!!! This is NOT the case. It is a terrible bias and people who think that way should go and get a grip on reality. Girls don’t have to be stupid to be pretty.
I wouldn’t mind a post of one or two “hate mails.” I’m by no means a skinny girl (at least not by this site’s standards, even when I had an eating disorder). And although some posts make me feel a little crappy about my body, they also motivate me to continue my exercise and nutrition regimen. Motivation is a good thing; if someone knows this site is unhealthy for them to be loking at, it’s their personal responsibility to go somewhere else.
The problem with “love your body the way it is” sites is that while you SHOULD love and respect your body (and some body types can’t pull off the desired “skinny look” without looking like cancer victims), I do not see how glorifying Size 16 makes anyone healthier? Seriously. Why is everyone all up in SG’s business for running a site to help people be model-thin but FAR fewer people are bitching about a site designed to make people feel like it’s okay to be obese.
Maybe it’s cuz SG inspires commitment and determination— Love Your Body sites inspire relief because you don’t have three rolls of fat between your arm pit and hip bone.
I actually think it would be a good sort of thinspo for me! haha The more people say negative things like that the more confident I am knowing how I want to live my lifestyle. SG – it’s definitely up to you! And those of us who want to read it can.. and the ones that don’t can be warned and skip those posts!
I’m not sure if I want to see the hate mail. I come here to get away from the prevailing view that it’s healthy to be a little overweight. This point of view is heavily supported by the food industry and pharmaceutical companies. They are very serious about convincing everyone of their rightness. It can get mean. I see that point of view on this site at times, but for the most part, it is a breath of fresh air to see the sanity here. People may disagree about how to achieve healthy thinness, but there is a support here for healthy thin which we don’t find in the media, advertising, or everyday friendships.
On the other hand, why should Skinny Gurl not have our support in this. Maybe posting them somewhere and having sane comments will diffuse it. ???
Of course the pharmaceutical industry wants us to all be fat so they can keep peddling their wares to the people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, as well as all the aches and pains related to their normnal size skeleton trying to support an extra 50 pounds, or more, etc. I have been skinny and I have been fat. Skinny is only better if I want to look way better, feel much better, sleep better, have more energy, better sex, etc… You get the picture? After pregnancy I had lost some weight and without thinking I sprinted to run across my lawn, only to realize fatasses can not run. UGH! Fat sucks!
I for one am curious!
wow i just found this website and i love you for thinking like i do…..i have always wanted to achieve a perfect figure eventhough i was always in the normal BMI zone.
and its like other people dont get it….what we want and how we want to feel.
i think i will check this site everyday and i want to finally get rid of those last 8 pounds.
thank you thank you.
xoxo
skinny girl to be;)
all the best negz.. =)
well.. i don’t mind at all..just post it dear..it will never change my concept on being skinny..
I could really care less either way bcuz I’d probably still read it. Lol
But on the body is a temple subject: I have studied Old Testament culture and in the temple only the best of everything was used. It was kept clean and was taken care of. Is hurting your heart with fried foods taking care of a temple? Is loading your body with toxins telling it ‘I love you’? I think not. Being at a healthy weight (not severe skinny or obese) is loving the temple. So to those who say my skinniness is hurting my temple: lay down the french fry and we will talk.
and that is why God gave us fruits and vegetable to eat so we would have a variety of healthy (LOW CALORIE) fresh food. The processed, fried crap that man has create is just making obesity worse and worse.
Yes! Post them! I think it is hilarious to see what some of those people say! Not exactly inspiring but it makes me want to prove everything they say wrong and it also makes me glad that I’m not them!
I just found your site due to the press you’ve gotten on the K.U. blog you wrote. I’ve absolutely enjoyed reading your insights and perspective of the obvious double standards our country shows towards thin women. I’m excited to be able to join the forums once they’re back up and running again (I hope soon). As for the haters, good for you for sticking up for your website and ignoring those that are trying to tear you down. Keep up the good work. Your writing is very entertaining and not to mention refreshing for saying what so many thin-gals wish they could say. A big thank you from a fan. And I vote you post the hate-mailer of the month/week; they could be your “Train-Wreck-Hater of the Week.”
Ha! I too just found your website due to the recent press. Well, of course, I had to check out your blog. I am a fatass & this is just the kind of motivation that will help me. I will be reading it frequently from now on. Isn’t it funny how controversy can be so beneficial to all involved? Thank you for the public service you are doing!
